Slate Stack Pavilion
KLEIN KAROO BARRYDALE | CAPE TOWN | SOUTH AFRICA
The 210-hectare site, a naturally formed terrace snuggled into the gentle north-sloping base of the Langeberg, Klein Karoo provided an ideal platform for four pavilions to be strategically placed to achieve solitude. Robust rectilinear pavilions were laid informally along the natural terraces & constructed through design principles visibly displayed through the Karoo architecture.
Deep slate stacked walls acting as thermal insulators quickly became a strong design feature allowing the pavilions to blend into the surrounding landscape. Each material is left to express its own honest and living finish within its harsh surrounds. The studio is self-sustainable in respect to on-site water harvesting and wastewater treatment.
