Garden Room House

Garden Room House

ERINVALE ESTATE | CAPE TOWN | SOUTH AFRICA

Garden room house sits on a plot within a golf estate site – not a location that lends itself to a quiet place of retreat. In order to achieve the sense of privacy and respite from the surroundings we decided the house should be enclosed and inward looking, occupying the edges of the site. The living space opens out onto a central courtyard, with narrow louvred openings encasing the dwelling while giving glimpses in and out towards the Helderburg mountains.

This new disposition of the house converts the wasted out-door flanking spaces into a valuable central courtyard, allowing the inhabitants to comfortably adapt within its protective shell. The structure is also terraced and includes a sunken garage, allowing the scale of the house to be repossessed by the landscape on which it sits.
