FRAME HOUSE
ELGIN VALLEY | WESTERN CAPE | SOUTH AFRICA
The design of Frame House as a luxurious spa focuses on the healing narrative of nature and the coming together of the indoor and outdoor spaces. Centered around a fireplace, the geometry terraces down towards the existing pond, blurring the edges between the house and the landscape beyond.
A solid plinth rises above the ground as a punctured void dressed in a lightweight steel roof that delicately adds texture to the outer skin. Once inside, you cross a footbridge that originates in the garden and extends over a reflecting pool. The expansive stillness of the waters surface reflects the space and gives a doubling effect to the volume. The raking light, the shadowy spaces, the reflections and the materiality combine to create a space with a quiet intensity and a gentle drama.
ALABASTER HOUSE
LLANDUDNO | CAPE TOWN | SOUTH AFRICA
Gently sloping through a mosaic of fynbos, boulders and dunes, the site stays true to the charming characteristics of Cape Towns surfer town, Llandudno. The project concept utilizes the beach as the central space of the house, and by way of contrast offsets this with angled geometry; making the most of the surrounding landscape and maximizing the panoramic views of the ocean and famous sunsets. This synthesis of a natural landscape, by gathering its elements, is a reinterpretation of the distant coast.
FOREST HOUSE
FRANSCHHOEK | CAPE TOWN | SOUTH AFRICA
A concept family home situated amongst the mountainous slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains. The design explores facets of light, filtering of natural breezes, layers of transparency and integrating indoor / outdoor spaces within dynamic patterns of light and shadow, to create a simple frame that enables a contemporary and sustainable lifestyle to unfold.
LAGOM LOFT
WOODSTOCK | CAPE TOWN CBD | SOUTH AFRICA
A design that remains mindful and true to the original buildings context and historical significance. Up keeping the integrity of the existing factory ‘bones’ was vital to our client. Walls and floors that were built in more recent years were removed to expose charred beams and remnant paint, scars of its past. By embracing the buildings industrial past, a visual discourse between new and old is created through insertions of modern materials.
BUTLER HOUSE
WELLINGTON FARM | CAPE TOWN | SOUTH AFRICA
A modern cluster house made up of three different sized cubes, overlapping each other as they frame three enclosed courtyards. The design places emphasis on accessing all the views on this special site, while maintaining privacy between each cube. The house gracefully embraces the hill side terrain, merging with its surroundings in a humble and natural manner.
